The four Chiang Mai golf courses worth a dedicated trip are Alpine Golf Resort, Highlands Golf and Spa Resort, Royal Chiang Mai Golf Club, and Mae Jo Golf Club — covering 99 holes across 60 driving-radius kilometres, with green fees from ฿1,200 (Mae Jo midweek) to ฿5,500 (Highlands weekend). A four-day, three-round package through a Chiang Mai operator typically saves ฿3,000-4,500 per player versus booking each course direct and arranging your own transport. Here's how the math works out and which course to skip if you're tight on time.
Which Chiang Mai golf course should we play first?
Alpine Golf Resort. 27 holes Schmidt-Curley design, the most reliably maintained course conditioning, the best driving range and practice facility, and a clubhouse that handles 4-ball international play cleanly.
Alpine sits 35km north of Chiang Mai near Mae Rim. The Mountain, Lake and Valley nines combine into three 18-hole rotations that play differently enough that two rounds on consecutive days don't feel repetitive. The course architecture leans into the foothill terrain — forced carries over creeks on the Mountain nine, undulating greens on the Lake nine, the more open Valley nine being friendlier to higher handicaps.
| Course | Holes | Design | Distance from city | Weekday green fee | Weekend green fee |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alpine Golf Resort | 27 | Schmidt-Curley, 2008 | 35km / 45 min | ฿3,500 | ฿4,500 |
| Highlands Golf & Spa Resort | 18 | JMP Design, 2007 | 40km / 50 min | ฿3,800 | ฿5,500 |
| Royal Chiang Mai Golf Club | 18 | Peter Thomson, 1996 | 30km / 40 min | ฿2,800 | ฿3,500 |
| Mae Jo Golf Club | 18 | Local design, 1990 | 15km / 20 min | ฿1,200 | ฿1,600 |
What about Highlands?
Highlands is the most dramatic round in Chiang Mai — JMP Design, big elevation changes, multiple forced carries, and the strongest "destination golf" feel. Play it second on a four-day trip, when your eye is in.
The course climbs from the clubhouse through old-growth teak forest with 30-40 metre vertical drops on holes 4, 9 and 17. The signature hole (par-3 14th) plays 175m over a ravine — first-time visitors lose two balls a side from awe. Greens are bentgrass, conditioned to USGA spec, and roll faster than the other Chiang Mai courses.
Highlands has the best spa and post-round facility of the four — a full Thai wellness operation including herbal steam baths and traditional massage. The lunch is the best clubhouse food in Chiang Mai by a margin. If you want to extend the recovery side of the trip beyond the clubhouse spa, a dedicated Chiang Mai wellness retreat pairs well with a rest day between rounds.
What's Royal Chiang Mai's case?
The most classical layout — Peter Thomson design, mature trees, smaller greens, less elevation change. Best for golfers who want straight golf rather than spectacle. Half the price of Highlands.
Royal Chiang Mai (originally Lanna International Golf Club) opened in 1996 and feels its age in the best way — established trees, settled-in greens, fairways that hold a draw on the right side and a fade on the left because they've been mown that way for 28 years. The Peter Thomson design is forgiving for higher handicaps but rewards course management.
The clubhouse is dated, the practice range is shorter, and the spa is basic. What you get is a quieter round at a lower price.
Is Mae Jo worth the time?
For a quick second-round-of-the-trip or a half-day budget play, yes. As a destination course, no. ฿1,200 green fee, 20 minutes from the city, OK conditioning, friendly local vibe.
Mae Jo is where Chiang Mai's domestic golf population plays. Saturday mornings see 60+ Thai golfers cycling through, lots of caddie-chat, longer pace of play (a 5-hour round is normal). For international travellers it's the most authentically-Thai golf experience — and the only Chiang Mai course where you'll commonly see all-female 4-balls of working professionals.
Conditioning is fair. The 11th tee box was patchy on our last visit. The price gap explains most of the experience gap.
What does a typical golf package cost?
Three rounds (Alpine, Highlands, Royal Chiang Mai) plus transport plus hotel for 4 nights: ฿24,000-32,000 per person twin-share, or ฿18,000-22,000 for a no-hotel "golf only" package.
The package savings come from three places: green-fee discounts the operator negotiates (5-15% off the rack rate), shared transport across the group (van versus individual Grab), and a single point-of-contact for tee-time changes if weather or schedule shifts.
The package math gets stronger with larger groups. A 4-ball saves more per player than a 2-ball. Operators typically have a one-player surcharge.
What's the right itinerary for a golf trip?
Four days, three rounds, one rest day. Arrive day 1 (no golf), day 2 Royal Chiang Mai (warm-up), day 3 Alpine, day 4 Highlands, fly home day 5.
Why this order: Royal Chiang Mai's gentler layout warms up the swing without punishing you for first-day rust. Alpine in the middle gives you the practice facility and a friendly enough course to recover any swing tweaks. Highlands as the finale because it's the most demanding round.
Add a Mae Jo half-day round on day 2 afternoon if you want a fifth round in the trip. Skip it if your back can't handle 4 rounds in 3 days. For non-golfing partners or a true rest day, a half-day Doi Suthep temple and Hmong village tour is the easiest add-on — it runs from the city and is back before lunch.
A typical day:
- 6:30 — Pickup from Chiang Mai hotel.
- 7:15 — Arrive at course, range warm-up.
- 8:00 — Tee off.
- 13:00 — Finish, lunch at clubhouse.
- 14:30 — Back to hotel or to optional spa.
- 18:00 — Dinner.
In-season tee times start as early as 6:30am. Out-of-season the heat pushes the optimal tee window to 7-8am.
When's the best season for Chiang Mai golf?
November through February. Cool mornings, dry, no rain, low humidity. March through May is hot and hazy from burning season — avoid if possible. June through October is the wet season with afternoon downpours but cheaper green fees.
| Period | Weather | Crowds | Green fees | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nov-Jan (peak) | Cool, dry, clear | Heavy | Full rate | Best — book 4-6 weeks ahead |
| Feb (late peak) | Warm-dry, can be hazy | Heavy | Full rate | Excellent if air clear |
| Mar-May (off) | Hot, hazy, smoky | Light | 20-30% off | Skip if you can |
| Jun-Oct (wet) | Hot, humid, afternoon rain | Light | 30-40% off | Morning tee times only |
How does caddy culture work in Thailand?
Caddies are mandatory — every Thai course assigns one caddy per player, no exceptions. They're mostly women, work for tips above the base fee, and provide more service than the Western caddy norm.
A good Chiang Mai caddy will:
- Read every green and call the line
- Hand you the right club without asking
- Wipe your ball and clean your grooves after every shot
- Hold an umbrella over you during light rain
- Repair pitch marks on the green
- Carry your bag (or push the cart on hilly sections)
The relationship is friendly but formal. A "thank you, ka" or "thank you, krap" after each hole goes a long way. Tipping in cash, in an envelope or directly to your caddy, at the end of the round.
Caddies are not transparent about course knowledge tests like a US tour caddy — they read the line as a flat distance and bend, not as a chart. Trust them on the local stuff (which side to miss on a par-5, when the wind kicks in on a specific hole), be more careful on imported club-selection logic.
Should I bring my own clubs?
Depends on the trip length. Two-round trip: rent. Four-round trip: bring your own bag (the airline fee is roughly the same as rental for four rounds).
Bringing clubs from home costs $80-200 each way on most international carriers. Renting at the course costs ฿800-1,200 per round. For four rounds at Alpine and Highlands, rental totals ฿3,200-4,800 (roughly $90-135) — the same range as the airline fee.
The hybrid play (covered in our FAQ above) is the most popular among returning golf travellers: bring your own irons and putter, rent driver and fairway woods locally. Saves bag weight, saves rental cost on the high-use clubs, and rentals cover the harder-to-pack clubs.

Frequently asked questions
What's the best golf course in Chiang Mai?
Alpine Golf Resort is the most consistent best-in-class pick — Schmidt-Curley design, 27 holes, mountain backdrop, and the most reliable course conditioning of any Chiang Mai course. Highlands is a stronger pure-design experience with bigger elevation changes and forced carries. Royal Chiang Mai is the historic favourite with the most classical layout. Mae Jo is the value pick. If you're playing one course only, choose Alpine for the all-round experience or Highlands for the more dramatic round. We book Alpine most frequently because international guests rate the practice facility highest.
What's the caddy tip norm in Chiang Mai?
Standard caddy tip is ฿400-600 per round at the upper-tier courses (Alpine, Highlands, Royal Chiang Mai) and ฿300-500 at mid-tier courses. The caddy fee itself (mandatory at all Thai courses) is typically ฿400-500 added to the green fee. So total caddy compensation comes to ฿700-1,100. Tip in cash at the end of the round directly to your caddy, not via the pro shop. Caddies are mostly women, work for tips above the minimum wage, and remember repeat players. A good caddy in Chiang Mai will read every green, hand you the right club, and clean your ball after every putt.
Can I rent clubs in Chiang Mai or should I bring my own?
Rental is universal at all four major courses. Quality varies: Alpine and Highlands stock late-model TaylorMade and Titleist sets, Royal Chiang Mai stocks Mizuno and Callaway, Mae Jo has a more mixed inventory. Rental cost is ฿800-1,200 per round for a full set. If you're playing 4+ rounds on the trip, the rental math gets close to baggage-fee math for bringing your own clubs from home. Most international guests we book bring their own irons and putter and rent driver and woods locally — the best of both worlds.
What's the cheapest golf course near Chiang Mai?
Mae Jo Golf Club is the value pick — green fees from ฿1,200 weekday and ฿1,600 weekend, versus ฿3,500-5,000 at Alpine or Highlands. The course is older, the conditioning is fair-to-good rather than excellent, and the layout is gentler. For golfers who want to play a quick relaxed round without the resort-pricing premium, Mae Jo delivers. It's also the best choice for a half-day round — closer to the city (20 minutes versus 40-50 minutes to Alpine) and turnaround is faster.
Are Chiang Mai golf packages cheaper than booking course-by-course?
Yes if you're playing 3+ rounds. Package math: a three-course package at Alpine, Highlands and Royal Chiang Mai through a Chiang Mai operator runs ฿9,500-12,000 per person including transport. Booking the same three courses individually plus Grab transport averages ฿13,500-15,500. The saving comes from operator block-booking discounts (5-15% off each green fee) and shared transport across the group. For a single round, course-direct booking matches or beats package pricing.
Do I need to book Chiang Mai golf in advance?
For November-February peak season yes, 3-4 weeks out for weekend tee times at Alpine and Highlands. Weekday tee times are typically available 5-7 days out. March-October low season usually has weekend tee times available 1 week out. For groups of 4+ at peak season, book 6+ weeks out to secure a continuous tee-time block. Our package partners hold tee times across all four courses and can usually accommodate a 2-week-out booking when individual direct booking would fail.
