Herbal compress massage in Chiang Mai· 37 shops

Herbal compress massage is a northern Thai speciality, using steamed bundles of local herbs to ease tired muscles.

Herbal compress massage, or luk pra kob, uses a cloth bundle packed with herbs such as lemongrass, kaffir lime, turmeric and camphor. The compress is steamed until hot and pressed and rolled across the body, usually after a Thai or oil massage has warmed the muscles. The heat and the aromatic herbs make it one of the more soothing treatments on the menu, and it has deep roots in Lanna tradition.

Because it takes preparation, herbal compress is more often found in the established shops and day spas in these listings rather than the smallest walk-in places. Both the Old City and Nimman have shops that do it well, frequently as part of a longer signature package.

A herbal compress treatment commonly runs from around 400 to 800 THB depending on whether it is sold on its own or combined with a full-body massage. It is a good choice in the cooler months from November to February, when the heat of the compress is especially welcome.

Tell the shop if you have sensitive skin or are pregnant, since the compress is hot and some herbs are avoided during pregnancy. Reserve through Chiang Mai Go Tours and we arrange the timing with the shop.

The warmth of a herbal compress is a fitting end to a cool-season day in the hills.See tours
